Lower Back Pain Treatment Program
Lower Back Pain Patient Background
Today, we saw again, a 62-year-old male with a long history of low back pain. His back pain started 34 years ago when he was an athlete and long-distance runner. The pain prior to his custom treatment program was severe, sharp and frequent. At times, he was unable to move. He has had all the usual conservative treatments and therapies; he saw an orthopedist who recommended epidural injections and exercise.
Combination Treatment Program
When we evaluated him, our impression was chronic lumbar hypomobility syndrome, chronic lumbar sprain. The MRI demonstrated multiple disc bulges in addition to two lower back disc herniations compressing the nerve roots.
We put him through a treatment course of prolotherapy for five sessions.
Positive Patient Outcome
At the end of the five sessions, he was pain-free. He came back a year later and had a booster treatment and now it is two years later, and he has been pain-free since we completed our treatment. The patient remains active and without complaints of pain in his lower back.
We outline this case study to not only demonstrate the effectiveness of prolotherapy, but it also to highlight that disc herniations found on MRIs are not always the source of lower back pain.
