Joint Pain Injections
Joint injections are usually performed in our state-of-the-art in-office procedure room often with a cold spray or other local anesthesia. After the skin surface is thoroughly cleaned, the joint is entered with a needle attached to a syringe. At this point, medications or natural substances can be injected into the joint space. This technique also applies to injections into a bursa or tendon sheath to treat bursitis and tendonitis, respectively.
Commonly injected joints include
- Base of Thumb
- Small Joints of the Hands and Feet
To improve results, Dr. Magaziner uses precision guidance with ultrasound or fluoroscopy.
When conservative treatment, or NSAIDS are not helpful we have a variety of methods to alleviate this pain. Cortisone is one option. When that is not successful, we can use Hyaluronic Acid which is a gel like medication which acts as an anti-inflammatory and nourishes the joint.
They come in different brand names such as Hyalgan, Supartz or Gelsyn. This can alleviate pain 3-6 months at times. Sometimes we also add vitamins and glucosamine sulfate.
Our newest methods for restoring joint health and reducing pain are the Regeneration and Growth Factor Therapies. We use stem cell technology, Platelet Rich Plasma or Prolotherapy medications to attract stem cells and platelets. These injections are usually done with ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance for accuracy.
Individual results may vary from patient to patient. For more information on intradiskal regeneration, please contact our North Brunswick office.
